Why Roof Top Tents Are a Game Changer for New Campers:
Camping enthusiasts, both new and experienced, are constantly seeking ways to make their outdoor adventures more comfortable, convenient, and enjoyable. While traditional ground tents have been a staple in camping for generations, Roof top tents have emerged on the market and have become very popular. In this blog post, I will discuss why RTTs are often considered more convenient and better than ground tents, especially for those just starting their camping journey.
1. Effortless Setup and Takedown (No more dealing with poles and stakes)
One of the most significant advantages of RTTs over ground tents is their ease of setup. Traditional ground tents often require a considerable amount of time and effort to assemble. With a RTT, you can say goodbye to tent poles, stakes, and rainfly covers. Most RTTs can be set up in just a matter of minutes, allowing you to spend less time on camp chores and more time enjoying the great outdoors and some much needed family time.
2. Comfort
Sleeping off the ground is not only more comfortable but also safer. Roof-top tents offer a cozy, elevated sleeping platform, protecting you from uneven or wet ground, bugs, and potential wildlife encounters. After your first night of sleep you will appreciate the extra cushioning and insulation provided by the built-in mattress, ensuring a restful night's sleep. In the winter months, you will definitely appreciate sleeping in a RTT instead of on the cold, hard, or icy ground.
3. Compact and Space Saving Design
RTTs are a space-saving marvel. They mount directly onto the roof of your vehicle, leaving your car's interior free for other essential camping gear. The design of a RTT means you don't need a large campsite or worry about finding level ground – simply park your vehicle, pop up the tent, and you're good to go. The space that I freed up in my vehicle is now used to carry other essential items or creature comforts for my trips.
4. Built-in Storage and Convenience
Many roof-top tents come with handy features like internal storage pockets, gear lofts, and even USB ports for charging devices. You won't have to fumble around in the dark for your flashlight or leave your valuables exposed in the car. One convenience feature that I enjoy is that some models come with pre-installed LED lights that you can power by simply connecting to a portable charger or power station. Another feature that I like is the shoe bags that come with some models. The shoe bags really come in handy by keeping the inside of your RTT clean and free of dirt, sand, and mud.
5. Protection from the Elements
RTTs are designed to withstand various weather conditions. They typically feature waterproof and durable materials, making them a reliable choice in rain, wind, and even mild snow. Plus, their elevated design keeps you away from the damp ground, ensuring you stay dry and cozy.
6. Quick Getaways and Flexibility
With n RTT, you can easily move from one campsite to another. There's no need to disassemble your entire setup; just fold up the tent, secure it to your vehicle, and hit the road. This flexibility is especially appealing if you want to explore multiple locations during your trip. When I first starting camping I thought it would be easy to pre-plan my camping trips. I was wrong. When the weekend rolled around and I made a decision to go on a trip, I felt it was a little labor intensive to move my ground tent and all of my gear from my house into my vehicle. Some days, after I finally packed everything that I could think of I noticed that I was a little tired or lost some interest in making my trip.
That all changed once I switched to a RTT. The RTT stays permanently mounted on my roof and my essential camping gear stays in my vehicle at all times. This setup has been extremely convenient when heading out on last minute unplanned trips. Now, I only need to pack firewood and snacks because everything else is there already.
7. Perfect for Solo and Small Group Adventures
Roof-top tents are ideal for solo travelers or small groups. They come in various sizes, accommodating one to four people, ensuring that you have just the right amount of space without lugging around a massive tent. Having a RTT has also been convenient when inviting guests to camp. Some guests have never been camping before or don't have their own camping gear. Depending on the situation, it can be convenient to sleep together in the RTT especially if you keep essential linen or blankets packed into the RTT just in case your guest forgets their sleeping bag.
8. Aesthetically Pleasing and Adventure-Ready
I will be the first to admit. I was a little skeptical at first about adding additional height to my roof but RTTs look pretty cool! They give your vehicle an adventurous, rugged appearance that is very popular with the campers and overlanders. Plus, they're designed to withstand the rigors of off-road travel, so you can take your camping to remote and picturesque locations. If there is no picture, it never happened.
Conclusion
While both ground tents and RTTs each have their benefits, the convenience and comfort offered by RTTs make them a compelling choice for new campers. They simplify the camping experience, allowing you to focus on what truly matters – connecting with nature, exploring new landscapes, and creating unforgettable memories. So, if you're ready to elevate your camping adventures, consider trying out a RTT. You won't be disappointed by the convenience and freedom they bring to your outdoor explorations.
